In Egyptian Mythology, Hathor was a deity known for wreaking great havoc on the people. This led to the Egyptians trying to appease her with wine and special celebrations. In one instance, Hathor had come to destroy mankind, but was fooled into drinking a large quantity of wine spilled upon the ground. She became so drunk that she forgot to kill the people, an event that was celebrated in a festival aptly named "The Drunkeness of Hathor". The festival coincided with the annual flood of the the Nile, when the iron rich soil caused the waters to appear red like the spilled wine that had fooled Hathor.
